Josef Ausserland - Wood Pictures
The veneers which I select for my pictures according to their colours and grain are cut with a knife or sometimes with a saw so that they fit exactly. They are then glued onto the base, wooden boards, under great pressure.
After this the surface of the picture is sanded by hand in several stages with different grades of sandpaper, whereby I take particular care to emphasise the beautiful natural colours of the wood and its various grains.
Depending on the theme of the picture, I consciously introduce highlights by colouring individual parts of the picture and by using coloured metals such as brass or copper. Whereas during colouring I ensure that the natural grain of the wood remains visible, the metals are usually nailed or screwed onto the pictures. This gives my pictures a new dimension - the movement which is inherent in the structure of the wood is combined with the static nature of the metal in a harmonious way.
My works are dedicated to nature and its beauty and diversity. Every one of my wood pictures is unique, and the selection of particular formats also gives my pictures something extraordinary.
