Ingrid Kreissl - Crocheted Pearl Jewellery
The technique of pearl crochetry was already established in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Baroque era. At that time, however, it was mostly bags and pouches which were made. The creation of crocheted necklaces only began in the Biedermeier period. During the Art Deco period (ca. 1905-1910), glass pearls were made into wonderful pieces of jewellery. Even up to and during the 1930s there were still many women around who had mastered this technique.
I have been crocheting glass pearls for more than 30 years now, and I mostly draw my own patterns. My necklaces are created with various techniques, in loops and slings, with air, chain and fixed stitches.
I particularly like to work with very small pearls of about 1-1.5 mm, some of which are quite old. In this way I have a wonderfully large number of possibilities to create patterns on a small surface. However, this work does take up a lot of time, so the jewellery has to be correspondingly expensive.
In order to be able to offer more affordable pieces of jewellery, I crochet part of the necklaces with larger pearls (2-2.6 or 4 mm). Even with these necklaces I sometimes work for 15 hours or more until they are finished.
